Understanding the Codes

The GLCEs (Grade Level Content Expectations)  are the specific skills that students are expected to learn in each grade.  GLCE codes will have the form similar to this fictitious sample:  N.ME.05.99.

The first letter indicates the math strand using its first initial.  There are 5 strands (Numbers & Operations, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Data & Probability) in the Math GLCEs.

The pair of letters represents the type of skill that is being learned.  The chart below identifies all of these two-letter codes.

The first number pair is merely the grade level.  Since each strand has many GLCEs, they are numbered starting at 01 and counting larger.  In our sample, the 05 numbers indicate a skill which is taught in 5th Grade. Such a skill would be tested in the Fall of 6th Grade.

The final number pair just shows the GLCE number within its strand.  So our sample GLCE would be the 99th listed in the Numbers & Operations strand.  Read below the chart to learn about the Core/Extended Core/NASL designations. (Note: Beginning in Fall 2009, Future Core designations cease to exist as they've been integrated into Core & Extended Core designations.)

Numbers & Operations

(ME) Meaning, notations, place value, and comparisons

(MR) Number relationships and meaning of operations

(FL) Fluency with operations with estimation

Algebra

(PA) Patterns, relations, functions, and change

(RP) Representation

(RP) Formulas, expressions, equations, and inequalities

Measurement

(UN) Units and systems of measurement

(TE) Techniques and formulas for measurement

(PS) Problem solving involving measurement

Geometry

(GS) Geometric shape, properties, and mathematical arguments

(LO) Location and spatial relationships

(SR) Spatial reasoning and geometric modeling

(TR) Transformation and symmetry

Data & Probability

(AN) Data interpretation and analysis

(PR) Probability

Understanding the Designations

Each GLCE also has a core designation based on its level of emphasis on the standardized test for our state, which is the MEAP Test.

A Core GLCE would identify a significant topic that is addressed with two items on the MEAP.

An Extended Core GLCE represents a skill that is an extension of a core topic. These GLCEs are addressed with one item on each MEAP Test and vary within each test form.

Some skills are difficult for a paper and pencil assessment such as the MEAP to evaluate, although they are expected to be learned.  These GLCEs are classified with the term Not Assessed at State Level.
